How We Help

Honoring Heroes, Changing Lives

What is a Hero?

At the Joshua Chamberlain Society, we define a Hero as “someone who puts themselves in harm’s way for the betterment of others.”
Our military service members embody this definition. That’s why we have a unique mission: to adopt, for life, local veterans who have sustained severe combat injuries, as well as the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.

Our Heroes have endured immense hardship in service to our country. We have the privilege of giving back—whether by helping a wounded veteran secure accessible housing or supporting the children of fallen warriors with college expenses. Beyond these efforts, we stand ready to provide daily support, ensuring our Heroes can lead fulfilling lives despite their challenges.

These Heroes are part of our communities. Donors and supporters can see their faces, hear their stories, and witness firsthand the impact of their contributions. In the pages ahead, you’ll get to know our Heroes—their stories of sacrifice, resilience, and strength are as heartbreaking as they are inspiring.
