Sgt. Douglas J. Riney

Heroes | St. Louis Heroes

Sergeant Douglas J. Riney was a devoted husband, loving father, proud Soldier, and dedicated public servant whose life was defined by service to others.

Born and raised in Fairview, Illinois, Doug graduated from Spoon River Valley High School in 2008 and later attended Spoon River College. Before joining the Army, he served his hometown community as a volunteer firefighter with the Fairview Fire Protection District. Those who knew Doug remember a man who could always be counted on. He was someone who loved deeply, worked hard, and put others before himself.

Doug enlisted in the United States Army in July 2012 and served as a Petroleum Supply Specialist with the Support Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas. During his military career, he deployed twice to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Freedom’s Sentinel. His service and leadership earned him numerous military honors, including the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, four Army Achievement Medals, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with three campaign stars, NATO Medal, and several additional commendations for his dedication and sacrifice.

On October 19, 2016, while serving near Kabul, Afghanistan, Sgt. Riney was killed in action after encountering hostile enemy forces during a mission supporting Operation Freedom’s Sentinel. He was just 26 years old.

While Doug served his country with honor, his greatest pride was his family. He adored his wife, Kylie, and their two young children, Elea and James. Doug loved spending time with his family, riding motorcycles, playing cornhole with friends, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers and St. Louis Cardinals. To his children, he was a superhero.

Doug’s loss forever changed the lives of Kylie, Elea, and James. Elea was only a small child when her father was killed, and James was just two years old. In the years since Doug’s death, the family has faced the unimaginable challenge of rebuilding life without him while continuing to honor his memory every day. Through their grief, they have carried forward Doug’s legacy of strength, love, and resilience.

The Joshua Chamberlain Society is honored to walk alongside the Riney family. Doug’s sacrifice will never be forgotten, and his legacy continues through the lives of Kylie, Elea, and James — and through all those inspired by his courage, service, and selflessness.
