Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gibson devoted his life to service, excellence, and family. A
native of Aurora, Oregon, Jon enlisted in the United States Navy in 1999 at the age of
eighteen. From the beginning of his naval career, he displayed remarkable
professionalism, leadership, and a steadfast commitment to his fellow Sailors.
Jon began his service as an Aviation Systems Warfare Operator and Search and
Rescue (SAR) Swimmer. His dedication, skill, and pursuit of excellence earned him
selection for the Navy’s prestigious Flying Warrant Officer Program. In December 2008,
he received his commission, and in August 2011, he achieved one of his proudest
milestones—earning his “Wings of Gold” as a Naval Aviator.
Following his designation as a pilot, Jon was assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat
Squadron 6 (HSC-6), based at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, California.
During his time with HSC-6, he served in several key positions, including Ground
Training Officer, Mission Planning Systems Officer, and Detachment Training Officer.
Jon’s technical expertise, work ethic, and calm leadership made him a respected and
valued member of his command.
On September 22, 2013, while deployed with Carrier Strike Group 11 aboard the USS
Nimitz, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gibson was serving as a pilot aboard an MH-60S
Knight hawk helicopter when the aircraft was swept off the deck of the USS William P.
Lawrence during operations in the central Red Sea. He and his fellow aviator,
Lieutenant Commander Landon L. Jones lost their lives in the line of duty.
Throughout his distinguished career, Jon received numerous commendations, including
the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and the Iraq Campaign Medal, among
others.
Beyond his military accomplishments, Jon is remembered as a devoted husband, father,
son, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Chrissy, and their two children, Makaylin and
Xander. Jon approached life with enthusiasm and purpose, finding joy in the outdoors
through surfing, mountain biking, and snowboarding. His integrity, humility, and
adventurous spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Chief Warrant Officer 3 Jonathan Gibson exemplified the highest ideals of service,
sacrifice, and devotion to family.
